Art curator Durva Gandhi recently presented a solo exhibition of Baroda-based artist Atmanand Chauhan 's recent works titled Silent Conversations in NCPA's Jehangir Nicholson's Gallery, in Mumbai.

Untitled, Acrylic on Canvas, 66" x 84"

Atmanand Chauhan is concerned with violence in society and the fears caused by violence. However, he has a very subtle, quiet, hidden response to violence. He uses objects associated with fire, fear, violence in a semi abstract way by creating an atmosphere, not by the presence but by the very absence of the story.

The idea of survival is the basis of Atma's work where he explores ways in which the act of surviving is a constant reality. This “survival” often translates into a fearsome control of nature and violent socio-political conflicts with people and cultures that appear alien to our own. We often use the guise of patriotism under which to carry out such debilitating attacks. According to Chauhan, this violence is actually targeted at ourselves though we are not aware of it when we are committing it and it will only lead to the wiping out of the human race.

Atmanand Chauhan has studied BFA (Painting), Faculty of Fine Arts, MSU in Baroda (2005).

The exhibition was almost prophetic and post-Mumbai attacks, the preview of the show was a subdued affair. Durva Gandhi also announced that the partial proceeds from the show will go the rehabilitation effort of the Mumbai terror attack victims.
