On Being Gandhi: The Art and Politics of Seeing

North Carolina: Bangalore-based artist Cop Shiva’s solo show titled On Being Gandhi: The Art and Politics of Seeing will open onSeptember 15 at Franklin Gallery @ History, Duke University, Durham, North Carolina. The exhibition is curated by Chaya Chandrasekhar (Oklahoma City Community College) and Janice Glowski (Otterbein University) with the support from the Duke India Initiative and Sumathi Ramaswamy’s Anneliese Maier Research Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany.

Named one of India’s top 15 rising artists, photographer Shivaraju B.S. (a.k.a. Cop Shiva) focuses on portraits of people living on the fringes, yet who embody the zeitgeist of contemporary India. The idea of masquerade in particular interests him. The exhibition features photographs of Bagadehalli Basvaraju, a village schoolteacher who routinely impersonates Mahatma Gandhi.

The exhibition will be on view till October 19, 2017.
